I'll begin by telling you a little about our backgrounds...
Garry (my partner) & I were trying to make our income from buying houses cheap, doing them up then renting them out for a much higher rental, we were working 14 hour days getting a lot of saw dust up our noses! We did ok but we were exhausted and couldn't put up with painful moaning tenants that forget to pay and ruined our beautiful houses we just finished doing up!
Before the houses we both owned our own businesses, Garry fixed and sold motorbikes and I owned retail gift shops. But we both didn't want to go down that road again, not with landlords sucking out a huge chunk of our income in rent not to mention staff who take even more and then don't turn up for work - there was no way we wanted that again! Plus for the amount of hard work and effort we had to put in, there really wasn't much money in it at the end of the day.
And going back to a 9 to 5 job WAS NOT AN OPTION! This is even worse than the businesses we owned. We remember well the restrictions on our time, the loss of freedom and worst of all being told what to do by others who most of the time didn't have a clue what they were doing. NO thank you!
Then one day we read a book about the EXPLOSIVE POTENTIAL on the internet and how people were making millions with online businesses. Now I've been around the block so to speak, so I wasn't easily convinced that these were the type of businesses that really did work as they suggested. But I knew from my own gift business, as we had an online shopping cart, that the internet really was the next big boom place to be.
Our love of eating out finally led us to choosing a restaurant dining guide web business. Every time we wanted to find somewhere new and exciting to eat we'd search and search the websites available but just couldn't find what we were after.
This type of web business also had everything we wanted - recurring income, work from home, no staff, we both get to do what we love (Garry was actually a photographer before his motorbike shop) plus we knew there was a gap in the market.
And so http://www.eatout.co.nz/ was built in Sept 2004 to fill the niche we had discovered. For 3 1/2 years we spent building this business into New Zealand's most successful online restaurant dining guide. Along with Claire's help we've systemised all our procedures to make a business model we can now franchise around the world.
Our goal is to be the world's most successful online restaurant dining guide.
